Backup.  Sort of like flossing.  You know you need to do it but it is a pain and you don't always get around to doing it.  Most people have never lost a hard drive so they think the odds are slim it will happen to them.  Well, the odds are slim, but it can happen.  Or your building can burn down or someone can break in and steal all your computer gear.  If you're lucky, your broken hard drive can be sent out for data recovery for $800-$2,800.  But if your drive is gone, your data is gone also.

There are several ways you can backup your data and take a copy of your backup offsite; Tape drives, thumb drives, external hard drives or burning CD's or DVD's.  But you just have to do it.  The easiest way we've found is to set up an online backup system.  COMPUTRONICS has looked at several systems and recommends the Divinsa system based in Tacoma.  Divinsa has servers in Tacoma that backup to other servers in Seattle.  So if Tacoma gets blown away, you can still retrieve your data from Seattle.  They will soon have backup servers in the Tri-Cities area as well.

With Divinsa, you download software onto your computer (workstation or server) and schedule a backup (how about 3:00AM when you're asleep?).  The software encrypts your data with 448-bit Blowfish encryption (secure enough for HIPPA patient medical data or Sarbanes-Oxley financial data) and transmits it onto the Divinsa servers.  The data is so encrypted that even Divinsa cannot see it.  If you lose your encryption keyword, your data will be locked up forever.  If necessary, you can retrieve your data from any computer anywhere in the world with your login name, password and encryption keyword.  You can ask the backup software to email you a log of the backup to make sure it was successfully done.  Backup couldn't be simpler.

If you would like to try a 15-day trial of the Divinsa backup system, click on the link below.  Remember, you don't have to backup all your data, only the data you want to keep.

While the download and installation is relatively easy, for the best success Divinsa recommends calling them and scheduling a twenty minute period where they can help you download and set up the scheduled backups.  Call them at 800-624-9561 Ext. 106.
